Mostly, the ones I see are from SEO scammers and domain parkers trying to pump the value of their domains to resell them, or straight up scamming others to download or even buy a re-packaged malware version of their open source software.
This is likely the reason why they do this and now vibecoding makes it easy for anyone to do this.
This is something I’ve seen before. Someone is registering domain names related to open source projects and then ‘creating’ slop websites about the projects. Not sure what the play is, or whether this falls into that category, but it’s really weird and takes control away from open source maintainers in a scary way. Maybe it’s extortion or maybe it’s an malware thing. I highly doubt it’s out of the goodness of someone’s heart.
Open source maintainers shouldn’t have to register their projects as trademarks/proactively register domains to avoid this, but that seems like the only strategy?
Best case scenario they’ll try to monetize the site. Worse case it’s a malware distribution play (can eventually change legit repo link to malicious repo)
So this is a landing page made by someone who doesn’t maintain the actual tool? This strikes me as a potential scam—build some domain rep off someone else’s tool then capitalize somehow
They should really put the video/gif from their repo README on the website somewhere. I clicked around for a while trying to see what it looked like and finally found it on Github.
As someone else noted, the site isn't affiliated with the project it's promoting. So there are two distinct "they"s in play here. No idea why that's the case, but it feels sus.
It honestly makes working with git so easy and fast that I would say it's the ideal way to interact with git. I highly recommend checking it out for a month if you're someone who would use git commands in the shell. I don't know how fast and visually clear the gui interfaces like the ones built into VS Code or Sublime Merge are but as someone who uses a terminal test editor having a tool like this has been fantastic.
Something else to try if you're a fan of alternative git interfaces is Jujutsu. It's CLI, and it's more of its own interface, but it's very Git-compatible, other than submodules. You pull from and push to Git remotes.

The README is now full of ads, lots of nonsense on the page just to reach the text and on top of that, it is now written by Claude.

Wow, you are right. I checked the repository out for myself and it has like two or three screens just of ads and sponsor plugs before any content.
I don't know about anybody else, but IMO it's far superior to ask for donations after delivering value rather than before. That way maybe someone who likes the content can donate once satisfied, rather than deciding "no" in advance.
